The Freestyle Pokérap

The title says it all. This is what happens when you start goofin’ off and someone mentions Pokémon, and then another throws out the word freestyle.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Beautiful

It’s crazy that 2002 was a decade ago – life sure has changed since then. Unfortunately, some things haven’t progressed as far as we’d like – namely the influence society has on one’s self-esteem. If anything, today’s critics are even harsher on every little perceived physical imperfection. As cheesy as it is, I can personally attest to knowing people who are beautiful not for their physical attributes, but for their unique personalities – each inspiring me to better myself in their own way. Without these role models, I would never have grown comfortable in my own skin, loud and obnoxious though I may be.

Christina’s song holds true just as much today, if not more than the past – her soulful voice highlights the enduring conflict between what one thinks about oneself versus what the rest of the world thinks. It’s much too easy to let the latter bleed into the former, and happens much too often. So hopefully, this artfully performed ballad reminds you that true beauty is visible to us all; we just need to focus beneath the surface more 🙂

FRESH FRIDAY: Dirty Bass

Far East Movement is back! *insert giddy Asian gesture* And this time they’ve brought with them one of the hottest rappers in the game right now, Tyga! All I know is that the last few times I’ve heard Faded, I’ve been….well, faded. And back to the song – The hooks are super catchy even if FM’s lyrics are meh, and the bass is definitely dirty-grimy-nasty. Let’s face it, Far East makes catchy music, and Dirty Bass is no different. It’s yet another club banger from our favorite East Asian artists – expect to hear this song numerous times this weekend. Definitely not a song to play if you ain’t ready to party!

TRACK TUESDAY: Feel Good Inc.

Today’s track is by a band that…doesn’t actually exist. Yep, the Gorillaz aren’t even real – they’re completely fabricated from the minds of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewitt, each character (2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, Russel Hobbs) all having a unique backstory and role in the band. The cool thing is that the Gorillaz sound changes constantly, as the musical contributors on each track differ, with Albarn being the only mainstay. That versatility led to the smash hit “Feel Good Inc.” from their album Demon Days; for me, this is the song that kicked off the Gorillaz’ mainstream success, being their most successful single to date. The music video is also very unique and definitely worth checking out. All in all, Feel Good Inc combines a catchy groove with De La Soul’s slick rapping, dope musicality, and an upbeat tempo to get the people up and jammin’! Hopefully not at work though. Unless your boss is cool like that.

Music Monday: Compliments (Remix)

Tank has been in the R&B game for a while – my personal favorites are “Under” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. For today’s Music Monday, we got the remix of his single off the upcoming album ‘This is How I Feel’. “Compliments” is definitely sensual, but as is Tank’s style, it’s not over-the-top. No need to worry though, since the remix features bars from T.I., who is more than happy to get graphic. Personally, I was digging the beats of the song – the musicality definitely jumped “Compliments” onto my “songs to choreograph to” list. Couple the light groove with the well-placed bass and you have a nice track. Plus, what lady doesn’t appreciate extra compliments? 😉
