A staple of my youth and the days when I would rush home from post-school extracurriculars to catch the last few moments of TRL, Craig David’s melodies expanded our knowledge of overseas talent and would pave the way for the likes of Taio Cruz, Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Jessie J. One of his chart-topping singles from the early 2000’s, “Walking Away” is anthem for all of us who have been met with some type of challenge and realized, it’s time to change it up and ‘find a better day.’ To know there’s something to look forward to, whatever the struggle, helps make this catchy tune solid in our minds and hearts.

WORLDWIDE WEDNESDAY: Wedding Dress

I listen to a lot of music from different areas of the world, but the one part of the globe I listen to the most is Asia. Japanese and Korean music are so rhythmically infectious even if you don’t know what they are saying half of the time. You can’t but help nod your head or get lost in the music. My favorite musician has to be Taeyang, he’s often been called the Korean Chris brown or Neyo. His song “Wedding Dress” is beyond anything I’ve listened to, I literally listen to this song 50 times a day. The choreography of the video, the story line that goes with it, and the smooth piano that’s matched with an even more impressive beat is something to listen to for sure. I know there have been many days when my iPhone is on shuffle and this song comes up, I don’t care where I am on campus I will always bust out the choreography from this video. BABY! LISTEN TO YOU HEART IT WON’T LET YOU DOWN!!!

Catchy beats underlie the message of pride from apl.d.ap’s tune “We Be Workin. Many of us from culturally diverse backgrounds can resonate with the head-nodding track not only for its quick drum line but also for its message of dignity in our family’s and individual sacrifice, hard-work, and accomplishments. As a fellow Filipino and immigrant, I can appreciate this track representing ALL people doing what they must to make their dreams a reality. “Most of us gotta leave our home so we can hustle” which threads us all in making our mark in this world.

FRESH FRIDAY: All The Places

Who doesn’t like to secretly wish that the coffee-shop music that’s providing a little melody to the hum-drum of the background noise surrounding while sipping on that latte, is interlaced with a catchy beat that makes you tap the side of your eco-friendly coffee sleeve?

That’s exactly the magic that Seattle artists Kelsey Bulkin and Sabzi, from Seattle rap group Blue Scholars, accomplished with their impromptu collaboration to create Made in Heights’ track, All the Places. The fusion of indie pop, electronic styles, and melodically-placed beats has a created a sound that’ll add a little more steez to your indie mood…or in my case, inspired to create choreo to release my indie-swag.

TRACK TUESDAY: Waves

Came across this song when my roommate said he had a great song for me to dance to. Normally I am a little skeptical about his music taste, but i gave it a shot. I wasn’t disappointed, this song has a great beat, smooth piano keys being played in the background, and an infectious rhythm that can’t be denied. Jhameel’s, “Waves” is something you should definitely keep your eye on.
